Child Rights :


Convention on Rights of Child : 1989

Emphasises the importance of the family and the need to create an environment that is conducive to healthy growth and development of  the child. It obligates the state to ensure that children get a fair and equitable deal in society.

 It draws attention to four sets of civil, political, social, economic and cultural rights:


Right to

  • Survival , life, protection and social security
  • Participation, Development, Education and Adequate standard of living
  • Name and Nationality 
  • Highest attainable standard of health & Nutrition 
  • Access  appropriate information

  • protection in case of armed conflict or emergency for the disabled children 
  • Support for early childhood care and development
  • Leisure, recreation & cultural activities
  • Respect views of child
  • Freedom of expression, thought, conscience & religion 
  • Freedom from exploitation, neglect, abuse and degrading treatment 




UN efforts on child Rights:


  • UN International Children's Emergency Fund ( UNICEF ) formed :1946
  • UN Declaration on Rights of child : 1959
  • International Labour Organization ( ILO ) sets minimum age of 18 for employing hazardous jobs : 1973
  • Declaration o. Protection of Women and Children in Emergency and Armed Conflict : 1974
  • International Year of Child :1979
  • Guidlines for prevention of juvenile delinquency : 1990
  • Child Rights International Network ( CRIN ) formed : 1991


Rights of children under constitution of India:


Article 45:

Right to care and education upto the age of 6


Article 21 :

Right to free and compulsory education between 6-14 years of age



Article 23 :

 Right to protection from being trafficked or forced bonded labour


Article 24:

Right against any hazardeous employment upto the age of 14


Article 39

Right to protection against forced occupation not suitable to their age due to their economic necessity, and right to protection of childhood.
